Below are some common questions which have been answered by Elaine Booth (who designed & makes every pillow for The Fashion Booth).

Are wool pillows the best?

Yes they are. Quality pillows made from 100% wool does not retain moisture or odour. With its natural spring and bounce, a natural wool pillow will cradle your head without lumps or bumps and is one of the best options around. Wool is also heat resistant so it keeps you warm and cosy in winter but comfortably cool in summer. Our wool pillows are made from 100% New Zealand wool which is not battered or in pieces. This results in a superior, long lasting pillow.

Are wool pillows good for you?

Wool is naturally non allergenic, anti static and breathable. Wool does not retain moisture and odour so it is ideal for those with allergies or suffering from poor sleep. A good quality wool pillow should be in one piece with a removable 100% cotton cover. This allows the wool inner to be removed, enabling the cover to be washed and the wool to be aired and re-lofted.

Can you get a 100% New Zealand wool pillow?

Yes – our wool pillows are made from 100% local, New Zealand wool. We are based in Roxburgh, Central Otago and have selected the sheep breed that produced the best wool loft and quality.

Can you wash a wool pillow?

Wool requires less washing than synthetic products. We recommend only washing the cotton cover with your pillow and instead removing the inner wool to let it air. This also restores the loft to the pillow. We include a cotton drawstring bag with your pillow so you can shape the pillow to your desired height and store the remainder of the wool.

Are wool pillows soft or firm?

Despite its softness wool is resistant to flattening and offers great support for people who sleep on their back or side. They are not like down pillows which your head sinks down into. This makes them a supportive pillow without being too firm.

Do wool pillows get lumpy?

The beauty of wool pillows is that you can remove and aerate the wool so that it retains its natural loft and comfort over time. This stops the pillow becoming lumpy or uncomfortable and having to be sent to landfill. A quality wool pillow will last a lifetime.

Do wool pillows make you hot?

A wool pillow is ideal for those who are always looking for a ‘cool spot’ on their pillow. A thermoregulatory, wool maintains a comfortable temperature whatever the season. Natural wool is resistant to heat so it remains more comfortable in hotter weather than synthetic fillings. Our 100% New Zealand wool pillows also include a 100% cotton cover to keep you comfortable all night long.

How long do wool pillows last?

A quality wool pillow will last a lifetime with the proper care. Use the cotton cover that comes with your pillow and regularly air your pillow to allow the wool to fluff out. This means a wool pillow may be expensive to buy but in the long term is both a sustainable and affordable choice.

Do wool pillows go flat?

All pillows will flatten over time, but the beauty of a wool pillow is that you can remove the wool to enable it to re-loft. Then you can replace the inner, shaping it to your desired height. Our New Zealand wool pillows also come with a handy drawstring bag so you can store any excess wool.

Are wool pillows good for neck pain?

It can be a struggle finding the right pillow but research shows that a natural wool pillow is one of the best for alleviating and preventing neck pain. Wool is soft and moulds to the natural shape of your head and neck. This promotes a natural sleeping position which prevents and alleviates neck pain. Our wool pillows are made from 100% New Zealand wool which you can remove to create the ideal sleeping height for your body.

What are the disadvantages of wool pillows?

Since wool is a natural quality product it means they are more expensive to purchase than synthetic pillows. This also means there can be less choice of pillow style making it harder to find a wool pillow that exactly meets your needs. Some people can find a wool pillow too dense when they first buy it. However the beauty of a wool pillow is that you can adjust the wool to create a pillow with the softness you are looking for.
